Swinton car insurance has set up a new arm of its insurance for "non-standard" drivers, aimed specifically at motorists who have built up penalty points on their license.
The sharp increase in the number of drivers who have accrued penalty points for speeding has led the insurer to believe that on its own, the scheme isn't enough to judge whether someone is a good, safe driver or not.
In response to the 12% increase of pointed drivers Swinton had witnessed, it has now extended its specialist branch - which formerly dealt with drivers of imported, modified and high performance motors - to cater for this growing group.
Malcolm Tarling from the Association of British Insurers stated that many insurers were likely to follow Swinton's lead, telling the Evening Standard that increasingly licence endorsements were seen almost as an occupational hazard and were no longer a sign of a poor or reckless driver.
Paul Smith, founder of the road safety lobby group SafeSpeed, welcomed the news as he said it proved "driving licence points no longer indicate risky drivers".
