Dad seen to be the safer driver

24 May 2007

Research from car insurance provider Privilege has revealed that children feel safer in a car if their dad is driving and not their mum.

Out of the 500 children who were quizzed on their parents driving habits, 47% said they felt unsafe in a car which their mother was driving, while 39% felt unsafe when dad was at the wheel.

Incredibly 9% of the children even reported being in a car accident while their mum was at the wheel, with another 8% saying they were in one while their dad was in control of the vehicle.

The most commonly found fault with their parents driving was that mum was bad at parking - agreed by 24% of the children - and that dad generally drove too fast, according to 21% of them.

Jennifer Culley from Privilege Insurance said: "With almost one in 20 children actually scared by their parent's driving, 'grown-ups' need to drive even more carefully and follow the rules of the road.

"Driving safely will help to put children's minds at ease, as well as demonstrate how they should drive in the future."

Ms Culley also noted that when the parents were quizzed on their own driving habits, 58% of them claimed that they drove more carefully when they had their children in the car.
