Research from a survey carried out by Auto Trader magazine has revealed that drivers prefer to sort out vehicle repair claims privately, rather than going through their insurance company.
Over half of the motorists who chose the private option did so in order to protect their no claims bonus.
The reason behind drivers snubbing their insurers may well be to do with past experience, with 40% of drivers stating that claiming through their insurer was "stressful" and a fifth of those who did claim declaring that they were unsatisfied with the service.
Jonathan Williams, Head of Marketing at Auto Trader, told Motor Trader magazine that motorists should always go through their insurer, even if going private may seem like a simpler option.
He admitted however that there was "certainly room for improvement by the insurance providers", adding: "Motorists should not need to dip into their own pocket to find repairs when an insurance claim could cover it. Insurance companies need to ensure the claims process is fast and efficient."
