Speeding causes 30m rise in car insurance premiums

19 June 2007

Speeding doesn't only cause fines and points on your license - it can also cause the nation's car insurance premiums to rocket, according to research from Swiftcover.com.

Insurance premiums rose by 30 million collectively thanks to the increase in speeding convictions and the 26% rise in the number of speed cameras in operation.

Shockingly, 40% of motorists questioned by Swiftcover.com thought that it is acceptable to speed on quiet roads, despite the fact that drivers with speeding convictions are more likely to have to pay more for their insurance premiums.

Swiftcover.com's Chief Executive Andrew Blowers commented: "Despite the steadily increasing number of speed cameras on our roads, it seems motorists are still happy to flout the threat of fines if they feel the road conditions are safe.

"Motorists are not only forking out more than ever before in speeding fines but are also fiscally penalised twice through increased car insurance premiums following a conviction."

Some car insurers - including Swiftcover - are starting to offer motorists with just one speeding conviction the same rates as those with no convictions at all, but it's worth shopping around to ensure consumers get the best premiums for them.
