Popularity of ethical car insurance growing

11 July 2007

Carbon neutral car insurance is becoming increasingly popular with eco-conscious motorists, the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) has revealed.

Green car insurance policies allow regular drivers who have no choice but to drive to work or on business the chance to drive ethically, insurance provider ETA said.

Customers offset the carbon emissions of their cars, while the company, which also provides breakdown cover, offsets its carbon footprint too.

David Douglas, spokesperson for the ETA, said: "We generally provide services that traditionally have been hard to make green, or have been provided by corporate bodies that really don't have any care for the environment - or, they didn't until recently.

"[The ETA] pitches itself as the green, ethical alternative. It's not for profit, none of the money goes into making a profit, it all goes back into providing you with the best service possible and the best planet possible.

"You're giving money to a company that's ploughing it all back into the planet, rather than a corporation that's serving the shareholders."

He added: "We would like everyone to get on their bikes and use public transport, but until there's a suitable transport network and there's a suitable cycle network, people are forced to use cars.

"And at this interim stage we will be the support to help people drive less and drive greener. So our philosophy is: 'Until there's a better way, we will help the current situation'."

Co-operative Insurance already offers green car insurance while More Than and swiftcover.com all offer discounts on policies for energy efficient cars.
