Warning to young drivers to get insured

17 July 2007

Young motorists need to be more aware of the "dreadful consequences" of driving without insurance, the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) has urged.

Many teenage drivers on the roads today fail to understand that insurance exists for their protection as well as that of other road users, the MIB explained.

As such the MIB believes it is the responsibility of the authorities to make sure that those new to the road view insurance as a legality rather than an unwanted expense.

Susan Beck, Head of Communications for the MIB said: "Young people are sadly over represented in both casualty and prosecution statistics. The high cost of insurance may be one reason why young people drive without insurance but we must not just assume that all young drivers will drive without insurance.

"There are lots of new products in the market, which are designed to make insurance more affordable for younger less experienced drivers. But the bottom line is that car insurance is assessed on 'risk' and this is why premiums for younger, less experienced drivers are higher.

"We have got to get into the psyche of young people and get them to understand that using the road can be a dangerous activity and that insurance is not an option; it is a legal requirement and essential," she added.
