Drink driving on the up

27 July 2007

Despite regular anti drink-drive campaigns throughout the year the summer months have caused an upturn in the number of drivers being caught out driving under the influence.

Police have been testing drivers throughout the summer, when drivers are more likely to have a drink during the day, to see whether otherwise sensible drivers have been paying attention to warnings.

Much to the dismay of car insurance customers however police - particularly in Scotland - have found that drivers are letting go of their willpower somewhat.

Chief Superintendent Mike McCormick, Road Policing Spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, said: "It seems some drivers are still not heeding the message.

"Despite the number of tests conducted, it's disheartening to see more drivers showing positive or refusing to give a breath test."

In Scotland, 4.2 per cent of drivers tested positive for illegal amounts of alcohol in their blood and arrests for drink driving were up 20 per cent.

The knock-on effects of research such as this will be felt by car insurance customers, who may unfortunately be footing the bill for fellow drunk-drivers who cause accidents in their area.
