1 in 4 drivers drive after a drink

3 August 2007

One in four (23%) of drivers in the UK believe that they are perfectly safe to drive after a pint, according to a recent survey.

The results of the research, which was conducted by Whatcar.com, has a significant impact on car insurance premiums, as it is often drivers that have a drink before climbing into a car that cause accidents.

And with stronger and stronger beers coming on to the market, it is more likely than ten years ago that one pint will in fact put you over the limit.

Taking the survey further, 15% of drivers would be happy to drive after a pint and a half of beer, while five per cent would even drive after two pints.

The results come in the wake of an announcement that the Government is considering a review of the drink-drive limits later in the year.

At present, Britain has the second-highest drink-drive limit in Europe, although the Government is said to be considering a ban on all drinking before getting behind the wheel.
