Drivers wary of used car dealers

31 August 2007

Eight in ten UK motorists say they would never use an independent used car dealer to buy a new car for fear of coming away with a dud vehicle.

A study by AA Insurance shows less then 10% of people would seek advice from a car dealership prior to buying a car. More than half (54%) of car buyers believed they did not know enough about cars to know what to look for. This led to fears from 33% who were worried about overpaying as a result, while 40% were worried they would not choose the right car.

Janet Pell, head of AA Car Insurance, said: "Purchasing a car can be intimidating for many people, especially if they encounter up-selling and are not sure of what to look for or what questions to ask the dealer.

"Before you buy, it's really important to do your homework and make sure you know what you want, what you're willing to pay and key things to check for to ensure you feel confident on the forecourt or wherever you choose to look for your next vehicle," she added.

One fifth of potential car buyers said they would prefer to seek buying advice on expert websites, while a quarter would ask family and friends for their advice.
