The findings of a parliamentary group regarding road safety has drawn a furious response from a motorists' group.
Reacting to this week's report from MPs group the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), the Association of British Drivers said that its recommendations were, in fact, "detrimental to road safety".
PACTS recommends a government-imposed 20mph speed limit in built-up areas, along with an expansion of speed cameras.
Spokesperson for the ABD Nigel Humphries said: "Concentration, alertness, and observation are fundamental factors required for safe driving, which are maximised by the driver setting a speed appropriate for the prevailing road conditions.
"Forcing drivers to travel below an appropriate speed is therefore detrimental to road safety."
Mr Humphries also said that the report was "a facade for a PACTS anti-car and anti-driver agenda".
Campaign group Safe Speed also criticised the MPs' report, saying that "we don't need more regulation" and pointing out latest government road figures, which show a higher number of people killed or injured in 20mph zones than in those where the limit is 30mph.
