Beware the November fog says RIAS

7 November 2007

Over-50s car insurance firm RIAS has issued a warning to Britain's motorists to drive carefully in what looks set to be a very foggy November.

The statement came following the release of a weather prediction for the month from the Met Office, which said that there was to be a "high risk" of foggy conditions setting in this month.

In advice issued to customers, RIAS said that drivers should not over-use their fog lights - following a Highway Code directive that they should only be switched on "when visibility is seriously reduced".
Car owners were also reminded to keep a safe distance from other vehicles when the mist sets in - as well as keeping to an even speed and using windscreen wipers to keep visibility as clear as possible.

Managing Director of the car insurance provider Janet Connor said: "Driving in busy traffic on a clear day is challenging enough, but you should be extra careful when driving in fog as visibility can seriously deteriorate in a matter of minutes - or metres."

"When severe weather hits - such as snow or wind and rain storms, we are far more likely to stay off the road but we also urge drivers to take stock and be prepared for these other conditions too."
