Car insurance crackdown proving successful

15 November 2007

Record numbers of uninsured drivers are being caught, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said yesterday.

Police using automatic number plate recognition devices have seen an increase in capture rates - with over 100,000 uninsured vehicles seized so far this year.

This compares favourably to the 78,000 car insurance dodgers caught during the whole of 2006.

According to the ABI, the cost of compensating the victims of uninsured drivers adds around £30 to each annual car insurance premium.

Director of General Insurance and Health at the ABI Nick Starling said: "These figures show that the determination of the insurance industry, and the police to drive them from our roads is beginning to bear fruit.

"However, we need to ensure that the penalties they face reflect the seriousness of this crime - uninsured drivers are a menace."

The government admitted earlier this year that there are over 2 million motorists in the UK currently without car insurance.

This represents around one-in-fifteen of the total.
