Car insurance firms must be informed before customers travel overseas in order to extend their cover, MORE TH>N car insurance has said.
This is due to motorists not commonly receiving the same amount of protection by insurers while they are abroad.
Under current laws, UK drivers are covered only to the minimum amount of insurance legally required, meaning that they risk paying for certain incidents out of their own pockets.
Motor Account Manager for MORE TH>N Keith Maxwell said: "What customers should do is, if in the UK they have comprehensive cover and they want the same level of cover when they're driving abroad, they need to phone up their insurer, and the insurer will issue what's known as a foreign use extension."
He added: "Our advice to customers is that, before you travel abroad, you should phone up your insurer and check [their cover]."
According to statistics from the Association of British Insurers, over 2 million UK drivers travel overseas with their vehicles each year.
