Switch to an eco-friendly motor, drivers advised

30 January 2008

Savvy car buyers could save up to £300 a year for trading in their traditional gas-guzzler for a greener model.

The single most important saving for an eco-friendly car such as a hybrid is fuel: green car drivers pay £165 less on average, figures from uSwitch show.

What's more, up to £125 of savings on road tax - and the peace of mind that comes with knowing that green cars emit one-fifth less carbon than other motors - might make buying a green car even more desirable to consumers.

Although the motors are not yet a common sight on UK roads - just 0.2% of all current vehicle registrations is for a green car - their popularity is growing.

uSwitch predicts that almost 30,000 will be bought this year.

Ashton Berkhauer, Insurance Expert at uSwitch.com comments: "A vehicle's green credentials are fast becoming a major selling point when it comes to buying a new car.

"However, it is not simply a case of motorists blindly jumping on to the green bandwagon - with fuel prices soaring to a record high, motorists are increasingly becoming attracted to these fuel-efficient, lower-tax green vehicles, finding them to be kind on their pockets as well as on the environment."

A recent report from the AA pegged annual average car insurance growth at 10% - providing further impetus for motorists to make the 'green switch' and to start saving.
