Ambiguities in many policies mean that motorists should check their car insurance before driving overseas, the AA said yesterday.
Public Relations Manager at the car insurance provider Ian Crowder pointed out that insurance rules differ widely across Europe.
A report from the RAC foundation has revealed that around 3 million British drivers travel to the continent annually via ferry or the Eurotunnel.
Currently, all drivers will be covered for third party damage while driving in Europe - but might not necessarily receive comprehensive cover, meaning that they could be left out of pocket if they suffer an accident.
Mr Crowder advised: "Just check your policy document and see if you're covered in the UK - the policy document may say: 'yes, you can go [out of] the UK but tell us before you go' [and] some say: 'yes, you can go, but it will cost you something'.
"There is no hard and fast rule as far as insurance on the continent is concerned."
