Drivers 'ignoring faulty vehicles'

25 February 2008

A high number of drivers are failing to visit the garage despite the fact they know there is a problem with their vehicles, it has been claimed.

New figures from esure car insurance have suggested that 71% of motorists can put themselves in this category, while 33% stated that they have put off repairs because of the cost involved.

Of those polled, a further ten per cent admitted that they have ignored defects until the date of MOT, something that the firm said is heightening the risk of accident.

Head of risk and underwriting at the firm Mike Pickard urged motorists to think of the consequences before negating any potential hazards.

"Driving a car with a fault, no matter how small it may be, could potentially increase the likelihood of having an accident or breakdown. Motorists should always think about the internal feel of the car whilst driving," he commented.

Motorists are now being charged 5% more on average for their premiums than 12 months ago, research from Sainsbury's Car Insurance has claimed.
