Motorists who opt for fuel-efficient or greener cars can save money doing so, an expert says.
Head of Direct Line car insurance Tony Chilcott said drivers were always looking for ways to cut costs and suggested a car that had fewer emissions and more miles to the gallon could help achieve this.
Direct Line research, however, reveals that more people than ever intend to buy a less fuel-efficient vehicle, such as a people carrier or a 4x4.
Some 1.2 million motorists, or 16%, who intend to buy a car this year will buy a car that is not fuel-efficient.
"Choosing a more fuel-efficient car can limit further damage to the environment, as well as provide financial benefits," said Mr Chilcott.
"And with ever increasing petrol prices, drivers are always looking for ways to cut the costs of motoring."
Drivers who alter the spacing between the digits on their registration plates could face a police fine, the AA has warned.
