Consumers advised to check car insurance before going abroad

5 March 2008

Those who are planning to drive when they travel overseas should make sure they have contacted their car insurance company ahead of time, it has been suggested.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager at the AA, said that motorists should first check their policy to make sure they have comprehensive coverage.

"If you have car insurance of any sort in Europe, you are automatically covered by law for the minimum legal requirement in the country you are visiting - usually third-party only," he explained.

This means that a driver who hits another vehicle or causes injury would not have their own costs covered, but only those of the third party, Mr Crowder said.

Motorists should phone their insurers "in good time" before travelling to verify that their coverage is adequate, he added.

Around three million British drivers travel to the European continent via ferry and the Channel tunnel each year, according to the RAC Foundation.
