Motorists 'hit by higher fees'

31 March 2008

Drivers are set to see the impact of increased driving test and theory test charges when they come into being at the beginning of April, uSwitch.com has stated.

The organisation claimed that charges implemented by the Driving Standard Authority mean that those learning to drive will face an extra collective charge of £14.4 million.

Brits will have to pay out £1,337 each, even before the cost of other charges such as car insurance, fuel and the vehicle itself is added on, uSwitch stated.

Insurance Expert at uSwitch.com Ashton Berkhauer noted that drivers should not have any "illusions" about learning fees.

"Men can now expect to pay over £1,069 to learn to drive, while women can expect to foot a bill of £1,605 as they take on average 20 lessons more than men. With the average person sitting their practical test two to three times before passing, learners must also have a contingency fund," he commented.

Last week a road safety campaign was launched to improve the condition of the roads in Scotland, something that may be a benefit to drivers' car insurance there.
