Insurance claims 'result from knowledge woes'

30 May 2008

Many drivers are unsure about basic driving theory and this is leading them to make car insurance claims, uSwitch.com has revealed.

Of those polled by the firm, 33% noted that they no not know what the national speed limit is, while 58% have no knowledge on the correct procedure should traffic lights fail.

And 8% of respondents got every single question incorrect, with just 1% seeing no wrong answers.

Insurance Expert at the company Ashton Berkhauer claimed that drivers need to be taught and retold the basic rules of the road if matters are to change.

He commented: "In fact, over 30 million motorists have never been tested on driving theory, suggesting a need for tougher testing. This could lead to fewer accidents, safer roads and lower insurance premiums for all."

And improved testing could ensure that safer roads are seen in the future, he added.

Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly recently met up with insurance insiders to talk about more advanced tests.
