A car has been caught speeding at way over the legal limit in one area of County Durham, even though a new initiative attempted to slow drivers down. The recent campaign was instigated by road safety officials and the police in the area after a number of accidents, reports the Northern Echo. It was specifically created as a precaution for those attending a horse fair that took place in Appleby earlier this month, news that may concern those with car insurance. Durham police's Sergeant Phil Hill said that overall, despite this instance, the event was largely a successful one. "Motorists can always expect a greater police presence on the A66 around the time of Appleby fair, but it remains a very busy road throughout the year ... it is monitored by ourselves and other agencies on a regular basis," he commented. The offending vehicle was clocked at 124 mph on the A66. A separate road safety drive was recently seen in Derbyshire as the police looked to make youngsters aware of the dangers on the road.
