Cumbria drivers 'snapped in error'

16 July 2008

Moves have been made to reassure drivers in the Cumbria area they were not breaking the law after a speed camera there became faulty. Drivers had complained that the device in Kirkby Lonsdale, on the A65, was flashing them even though they believed they were keeping to the legal limit, reports the Westmorland Gazette. But Cumbria Safety Cameras Administration Manager Andrew James noted that while officials were aware of the situation the camera started to behave erratically on July 14th, something that may be of interest to those with car insurance. He asserted that no one caught up in the episode will be hit with police action. "Engineers have been called and we are hoping it will be fixed as soon as possible. I can guarantee that no prosecutions will take place as a result of this," he commented. This week, councillors in Swindon sparked a debate about the usefulness of speed cameras by suggesting there may be better ways to police law-breaking drivers.
