A third of British motorists admit to having driven in a potentially dangerous way, according to new research from Sainsbury's Car Insurance. Its survey shows that 65% of drivers have engaged in some form of potentially dangerous activity while behind the wheel in the last month. Eating and drinking while driving was the most common misdemeanour, admitted by 42% of motorists questioned. Some 28% also put their lives and their car insurance premiums at risk by driving while tired and 18% said they had driven wearing inappropriate footwear. Despite tough laws on mobile phone use, 14%of drivers also admitted to making a call on their mobile phone while on the move and 11% confessed to sending a text message. Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's Car Insurance Manager, said: "It can be easy to become complacent behind the wheel of a car especially when driving regular routes but our advice is to stay alert and safe and don't allow yourself to be distracted." Meanwhile, research from NFU Mutual shows that over a quarter of drivers using satellite navigation systems admit to following instructions even when they appear to be leading them down narrow or unsuitable roads.
