BIBA hopes for car insurance exemption to equalities bill

1 August 2008

A spokesman for the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has said his organisation is calling for an exemption from the equality bill to ensure customers get the "fairest deal" possible. In June, the government set out plans to address inequalities in society and under its proposals car insurance providers could be forced to reduce their premiums for younger drivers, who currently pay much more than older motorists. But Graeme Trudgill, Technical and Corporate Affairs Executive at BIBA, said it is important that the insurance industry is made exempt and that it retains based pricing. For example, he insisted that a 55-year-old driver should be entitled to lower premiums than a 17-year-old motorist with no experience. "We do believe in the equality bill, but we do believe that the insurance industry needs to be dealt with accordingly so that people should be able to get discounted products when they deserve them," he remarked. Figures from the AA show that the average quoted car insurance premium rose by more than £20 in the second quarter of this year.
