Motorists given sleep-deprivation warning

13 August 2008

Motorists are being warned not to drive whilst tired to reduce the risk of accidents that could endanger their lives and their car insurance policies. According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), fatigue is a "silent killer" on the roads, having a similar affect on concentration and awareness as alcohol. It claims as many as one in five motorway crashes are related to tiredness and insists drivers must be made aware of the problem. Motorists are advised to get plenty of rest before setting off on a long journey and to avoid driving at times when they would usually be sleeping. They should also take regular breaks at least every two hours during which they get out of the vehicle and walk around. Following these simple steps could help to avoid accidents, which as well as putting lives in danger could also invalidate a car insurance policy, the IAM points out. According to the road safety charity Brake, accidents involving driver fatigue tend to be more serious than other types of crashes as motorists do not take their foot off the accelerator beforehand.
