Drink-driving 'can seriously impact car insurance premiums'

A conviction for drink-driving could seriously impact a driver's car insurance premium, Norwich Union has warned. Erik Nelson, a spokesperson for the insurance provider, said a motorist who is caught driving under the influence of alcohol could see the cost of their car insurance rise significantly. He also advised drivers to be honest when it comes to telling insurance providers about drink-driving and other motoring convictions. "If a motorist fails to declare their convictions they risk their motor insurance policy becoming void in the event of a claim," he stated. His comments come after research by the road safety charity Brake, released last year, revealed that 19% of 17 to 18-year-old motorists have driven whilst over the drink-drive limit. And a report by the Motor Insurers' Bureau, also released last year, found that uninsured drivers are ten times more likely to have a conviction for drink-driving than insured drivers.
