Motorists are being urged to check the tread and pressure of their tyres to avoid putting their lives and car insurance premiums at risk. According to research by the RAC Foundation, 45% of drivers are unaware of what the minimum legal tread depth for tyres should be. It estimates that as many as 12% of cars are running on illegal tyres. This is despite the fact that worn tyres can affect steering, braking and acceleration which could lead to a serious accident. Elizabeth Dainton, Research Development Manager for the RAC Foundation, said: "How well the road and tyre grip each other may be the difference between life and death in an emergency, making it vitally important for motorists to check their tyres regularly." The organisation also points out that under-inflated tyres were a factor in 2% of fatal road accidents in 2006. Meanwhile, TyreSafe is also issuing a safety warning to motorcyclists who it claims should also ensure their tyres are correctly inflated and that they conform to current tread depth legislation.
