Drink driving dangers 'should be considered year-round'

20 August 2008

People should be concerned about the dangers posed by drink drivers all year round, not just at the Christmas season, uSwitch.com has asserted. The price comparison and switching service warned that the summer months may be even more dangerous than the winter festive season on British roads, with analysis of road traffic accidents revealing a four per cent increase in drink driving casualties in the month of August when compared to December. Figures compiled by the group found that one in five drivers are more tempted to drive fast during the summer, while 20% of the half-million drivers who are stopped and breathalysed each year are found to be over the legal limit. And while speeding offences can increase the cost of a car insurance premium by around 49%, a drink driving conviction can increase car insurance costs by an average of 63%. The Ministry of Justice has reported that new prison penalties for motorists who kill while driving in an avoidably distracted manner at the wheel have been in effect since Monday (Agust 18th). Avoidable distractions could include eating, drinking, applying makeup or using a mobile phone.
