Car insurance customers given motorway breakdown tips

26 August 2008

Car insurance customers are being urged to stay safe if they break down on the motorway hard shoulder. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued advice for drivers who find themselves in trouble on the motorway. "Understanding the risks at the roadside and knowing what to do will keep you and your passengers safe," the organisation states. Drivers should pull over to the far-left side of the hard shoulder if they experience a breakdown and put on their hazard warning lights immediately, IAM advises. They should put on a high-visibility jacket to enable them to be seen by other road users and move away from the vehicle on the left hand side behind the motorway barrier. Drivers should not attempt to carry out repairs on maintenance themselves while on the hard shoulder and should call for roadside assistance instead. According to the road safety charity Brake, around 250 people are killed or injured each year on the hard shoulder.
