British motorists are putting their lives and car insurance premiums at risk by speeding on motorways, new research has shown. According to a survey by insurance company swiftcover.com, 79% of drivers admit to driving beyond the legal speed limit when on the motorway. In addition, 71% have exceeded speed limits on A and B roads, while 61% have done so in towns where 30mph restrictions apply. However, while the vast majority of drivers do speed, most do not realise their actions may have an inflationary impact on their car insurance, the research shows. Craig Staniland, Underwriting Director for swiftcover.com, said: "The fact that a high proportion of drivers don't know this affects their insurance is a major concern." Separate research conducted by Sainsbury's Car Insurance in July reveals that 65 per cent of drivers have engaged in a potentially dangerous activity behind the wheel. These include eating or drinking, driving while tired, using a mobile phone and wearing inappropriate footwear.
