Drivers 'should inform car insurance firms of modifications'

10 September 2008

Any modifications drivers make to their vehicles must be declared to their insurance company, Tesco Car Insurance has warned. It insisted that even small modifications can have an impact on premiums and failure to declare them could result in invalidated claims. Fitting alloy wheels, installing new sound systems or adding body kits can cause insurance costs to rise. Similarly, the addition of immobilisers, alarms and tracker devices could bring premiums down. Allan Burns, Head of Tesco Car Insurance, said: "What we are encouraging people to do is to let their insurance provider know what modifications have been made so that they have the right vehicle cover." Research by the insurer found that 15% of drivers have modified their car in some way, with motorists in Norwich most likely to add extras to their vehicles. Meanwhile, the insurer swiftcover.com has advised younger motorists to shop around for car insurance deals, insisting they could save up to £150.
