One in four motorists 'not covered for flood damage'

11 September 2008

One in four motorists is uninsured against flood damage because they only have third party cover, uSwitch.com has warned. Research by the independent price comparison and switching service revealed that 1.5 million cars are at risk in potential flood areas across Britain. Motorists whose vehicles are damaged by flooding could see their premiums rise by as much as 26%, uSwitch.com calculated. However, it found that a quarter of drivers living in flood risk areas have non-comprehensive car insurance, which means they may not be able to claim for damage. Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, warned: "If drivers do not insure their cars properly, they could suffer the financial consequences long after the flood waters recede." He advised motorists to check their current level of cover with their car insurance provider as soon as possible, particularly if they live in an area prone to flooding. The Met Office has predicted that heavy rainfall will affect parts of UK over the next week, with western areas seeing the highest levels.
