Motorists warned over catalytic converter thefts

15 September 2008

Motorists are being warned of an increase in cases of catalytic converter and fuel theft from parked cars, which is adding to the cost of car insurance policies. According to AA Insurance, the rising cost of fuel and scrap metal is causing incidents of theft to rise and it is urging drivers to take steps to protect their vehicles. As well as paying to replace the stolen fuel or parts, motorists may also see their car insurance policies rise if they need to make a claim as a result of damage. "This is a new crime resulting from high fuel and scrap metal values," said AA Insurance Director Simon Douglas. "It causes considerable inconvenience and expense for innocent motorists." He advised drivers to have their catalytic converter marked so it can be traced back to the car if removed and to fit security devices such as motion-sensitive alarms to their cars. As well as deterring thieves, this could also save motorists money on their car insurance as providers will consider them less likely to make claims. The Evesham Journal reported recently that two people had been arrested in connection with a spate of fuel thefts in Wyre Piddle.
