British motorists are becoming increasingly confused by parking rules, according to a new survey by the car insurance provide esure. It found that more than 90% of drivers admit to being baffled by parking regulations, while 74% do not recognise all the Highway Code rules on parking. Giving reason for their confusion, 58% put it down to frequent changes on parking policies in their local area. Meanwhile, 60% said they thought parking signs were made to be deliberately misleading, allowing local councils to raise money through fines. Mike Pickard, Head of Risk and Underwriting at esure car insurance, said parking violations will not affect car insurance premiums. However he added: "They can significantly affect the overall cost of running a car, so do your best to avoid them." Last year, a report by the RAC Foundation concluded that up to 70% of road signs on rural roads are unnecessary and should be removed, insisting that the overuse of signs can confuse motorists.
