Brits 'changing their driving habits'

30 September 2008

British motorists are changing their diving habits in order to cope with the spiralling cost of living, new research from uSwitch.com has revealed. According to the independent price comparison and switching service, over half of drivers are cutting back on the number of trips they make. The survey shows that 38% of motorists now use their cars for essential trips only. And it seems the school run is no longer seen as a necessary journey, with over a quarter of drivers saying they no longer take their children to school by car. Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said this shift in behaviour is good news, both in terms of its environmental benefits and the impact it could have on car insurance premiums. "Insurers take annual mileage into account when calculating premiums, he explained, pointing out that "lower mileage could result in lower premiums". A recent survey carried out by AA Insurance revealed that rising motoring costs have prompted 47% of drivers to consider car sharing.
