Protect your no claims bonus, drivers urged

4 November 2008

Motorists looking to secure the most competitive car insurance deals are being urged to protect their no claims bonus. According to the insurance provider RIAS, drivers with a good no claims bonus can reduce their annual car insurance costs by as much as 75%. But the provider also warns that while a maximum no claims bonus can take five years to accumulate, this hard work could be undone in seconds if motorists do not take steps to protect it. "Although drivers are fully aware of the importance of building up and maintaining their no claims bonus, not many are aware of the various ways of protecting or safe-guarding it," said RIAS Managing Director Janet Connor. The insurance firm advises drivers to make regular checks of their vehicles to ensure they are road-worthy and to avoid taking unnecessary risks. It also suggests that motorists balance the cost of paying to repair minor damage themselves against losing their no claims bonus. Figures from the AA show that over the last 12 months, average quoted premiums for comprehensive car insurance cover have increased by £50.
