Motorists 'making car buying decisions based on running costs'

10 November 2008

A large number of UK motorists are basing their car buying decisions on running costs, according to a new survey by AA Personal Loans.

The research shows that 45% of drivers now look for a car that is cheaper to run - an increase of 17% over the last six months.

Reliability is now the second most important factor after running costs.

Mark Huggins, chief executive of AA Personal Loans, said: "The current financial climate is making people reconsider their options when buying a car and looking for something cheaper to run is a good way for a family to economise."

As well as saving on petrol costs, a more fuel-efficient model will help drivers cut their road tax bill.

They could also benefit from cheaper car insurance, as some providers reward motorists who drive greener cars.

Research carried out recently by uSwitch.com revealed that 77% of drivers plan to spend less on their next car or put off buying a new one as the country heads into a recession.
