Bad driving habits 'pushing up motoring costs'

12 November 2008

Motorists who pick up bad driving habits and who put off basic maintenance could be responsible for pushing up their own motoring costs, new research shows. According to Tesco Personal Finance, more than three-quarters of drivers fail to keep up to date with regular vehicle checks, which could result in large repair bills if their car breaks down. Furthermore, some 14% admit to driving in the wrong gear, which could damage their engine and cost them out hundreds of pounds to fix. Allan Burns, Head of Insurance at Tesco Personal Finance, said: "Keeping up to speed with general maintenance and curbing bad driving habits will ensure the roads are safer and could help drivers save thousands of pounds." As well as cutting the cost of repairs, taking Mr Burns' advice could also help motorists to save on breakdown cover and car insurance. Meanwhile, the Institute of Advanced Motorists has issued a checklist for drivers taking to the roads during the cold winter months. It advises motorists to check their antifreeze levels, stock up on de-icer and ensure their wiper blades are in good working order before setting off on a journey.
