British motorists are making more than 34 million car trips under one kilometre every year, which is contributing to global warming and may be causing unnecessary wear and tear to their vehicles.
This is the conclusion of a survey by Abbey Credit Cards, which reveals that 54% of drivers feel guilty about using their car to travel such short distances when they could walk or cycle instead.
Callum Gibson, head of Abbey Credit Cards, said: "For some the guilt in the guilt trips is to do with their carbon footprint, for others, it's about the cost of making those trips."
As well as spending more on petrol, motorists who make regular unnecessary journeys may also find themselves facing bigger repair bills or more expensive car insurance premiums due to the extra mileage they are clocking up.
Tesco Personal Finance warned recently that drivers who adopt bad habits such as riding the clutch and driving in the wrong gear could also be pushing up their own motoring costs.
