The government has proposed the introduction of harsher punishments for motorists caught speeding in a bid to boost Britain's road safety record.
Under the plans, drivers exceeding legal speed limits by 20 miles per hour or more would receive six penalty points on their licence.
This means that after two offences they would face a driving ban. It also means they could potentially face much higher car insurance premiums.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said that while the number of people killed or injured on Britain's roads has fallen dramatically in the last ten years, the numbers are still too high.
"To tackle this we must crack down on the most dangerous drivers - the selfish minority whose reckless behaviour can have a catastrophic impact on innocent victims and their families."
Currently, the minimum fine for speeding is £60 and three penalty points. For serious offences, motorists will be summoned to court.
