Better driver training 'could reduce work-related accidents'

1 December 2008

Companies could keep their employees safer and reduce the number of car insurance claims they make by investing in better driver training, it has been suggested.

According to Mercedes-Benz World, around 55,000 work-related car accidents could be avoided each year if at-work drivers were enrolled on safer motoring courses.

Figures from the Department for Transport figures show that 27% of all road accidents in the UK last year involved drivers making work-related journeys.

Professional instruction and training could shrink this figure, as well as helping to save businesses money on their car insurance by reducing the number of claims made by employees, Mercedes-Benz World suggested.

Commenting, Adrian Walsh, Director of RoadSafe, told Fleet Directory: "Companies need to focus on implementing comprehensive occupational road risk management strategies to make sure their employees are safe when driving."

According to a survey carried out by Brake and Green Flag Motoring Assistance, 54% of at-work motorists believe they would benefit from additional training.

Businesses looking to cut their car insurance costs could consider switching to a cheaper supplier.
