Carrying out basic tyre pressure checks could reduce the risk of accidents and therefore preserve car insurance no claims bonuses, drivers are being reminded.
According to a new survey by Haynes, some 87% of motorists forget to check the pressure of their tyres on a regular basis.
The automotive repair manual publisher claims such checks should be carried out once a week and insists they could help to save lives.
It also advises drivers to check the pressure of their spare tyre as well to make sure they are fully prepared for their journey.
As well as increasing fuel consumption, under-inflated tyres could cause a driver to crash because they have less grip on the road and can puncture more easily.
"This vital check may save you from returning to your vehicle to find a flat tyre, experiencing a blow-out on the motorway, or even worse, a crash," states Haynes.
According to the AA, tyre pressures should only be checked when tyres are cold.
Motorists can compare car insurance premiums online now to make sure they are getting the best deal.
