Brits change driving habits to save money

8 December 2008

The majority of UK motorists have changed the way they drive in the last 12 months in a bid to save money on fuel, new research shows.

According to a survey by Mintel, some 80% of car owners have altered their driving habits to reduce the amount of fuel their vehicle consumes.

Some of the most popular measures include making sure tyres are at the correct pressure, switching off air conditioning and removing unnecessary weight from cars.

Mintel Senior Leisure Analyst Jim Clark said: "In the absence of the entire nation throwing away their car keys, using less petrol or diesel is a realistic money saving compromise that most Brits are now willing to make."

As well as saving on fuel costs, motorists could also secure cheaper car insurance premiums by driving economically and minimising vehicle wear and tear.

Indeed, automotive repair manual publisher Haynes reminded motorists recently that carrying out regular tyre pressure checks could reduce the risk of accidents significantly.
