Booze cruisers 'putting insurance at risk'

16 December 2008

A large number of motorists heading overseas on Christmas booze cruises could be putting their car insurance premiums at risk, it has been claimed.

According to esure, around 2.3 million Brits intend to cross the channel in their cars to buy cheap alcohol for the festive season this year.

However, the insurance provider warns that more than half of them are likely to drive illegally once out of the UK as they are not aware of the road rules in their chosen destination.

Mike Pickard, Head of Risk and Underwriting at esure, points out that failure to read up on the different motoring rules and regulations could lead to fines.

This could push up the price of car insurance, adding even more to a driver's overall motoring costs.

The esure survey also shows that many motorists assume their car insurance will cover them while abroad, even though this may not be the case.

A survey by swiftcover.com revealed recently that 64% of British motorists think they drive better than their European counterparts.

Motorists can compare car insurance premiums online now to make sure they are getting the most for their money.
