The British Insurance Brokers Association is warning motorists that they could fall victim to frosting if they leave their car unattended while warming up the engine in cold weather.
Spokesman Graeme Trudgill said that many drivers leave the engine of their vehicle running with the keys in the ignition while they run back into the house to do something else.
But if their car is stolen by an opportunist thief, they could find that their car insurance is invalidated because they have left the vehicle out of sight, potentially on a public road.
"Essentially your claim may not be paid so it is very important to take care. Give yourself a few minutes extra to be out there with the car while you are attending to it," he remarked.
Car insurance provider LV= also advised motorists recently not to leave expensive items unattended in their cars as this could encourage a break-in.
Does your car insurance offer the best level of cover for the best price? If not, switch to a different provider.
