Downsizing vehicles 'increasingly common'

10 March 2009

Many motorists are considering downsizing their vehicle in an attempt to cut car insurance costs, it is suggested.

New research from Saga reveals March is generally the peak season for buying car insurance, with many motorists considering ways to reduce their premiums.

Statistics show 8% have increased the voluntary excess in order to reduce their monthly costs, with a further 8% downsizing to a smaller engine.

"Many more people could be taking some simple steps to reduce the cost of their car insurance ... However, it's important to ensure the quality of the cover isn't compromised and the policy still meets all your needs," reveals Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive of the Saga Group.

Some car insurance customers have also opted to remove named drivers from their policy, while 73% are failing to make additional savings by not taking any steps at all.

Earlier this week, the AA made calls for motorists to be up front when renewing their car insurance, urging them to declare any previous claims and convictions. Search online now for the best car insurance deals.
