Pothole epidemic 'increases insurance claims'

12 March 2009

Post-winter potholes are causing problems for the country's motorists, with many incidents leading to car insurance claims, research shows.

Findings compiled by AA Car Insurance show the number of claims last month had trebled, with around 2,000 drivers requesting insurance payouts for pothole-related damage.

"Like any injury, a pothole that doesn't receive first aid will brood and grow into a gaping open sore on the road, inflicting damage to wheels, suspension and bodywork," comments Simon Douglas, Director of AA Insurance.

The expert says some damage is made worse when it fills up with water, which can lead to a range of problems including damage to exhaust systems and steering.

Many motorists are postponing making an insurance claim, Mr Douglas adds, which is mainly because they believe the cost of damage does not justify the claim.

Also announced by the AA this week is that many of Britain's young motorists would rather be taught how to drive with their dad than their mum.
