Motoring offences 'impact car insurance premiums'

23 April 2009

Minor motoring offences can have an impact on a driver's car insurance premium, it is believed.

Ian Crowder, spokesperson for the AA, says anything from careless driving to drink driving can cause premiums to increase.

He continues: "There is direct relationship between people who have driving convictions and the claims that they make.

"The insurance industry rightly takes that into account when they're calculating the premiums that you should pay."

It is often a matter of how the police interpret cases as to how they treat them, Mr Crowder states, with enforcers of the law having to decide if someone was driving in an unsafe manner due to distraction.

According to a press release from the AA on careless driving, insurance companies are cracking down on this by increasing premiums quoted for offenders or even refusing cover.
