Many motorists 'miss MOT renewal date'

24 April 2009

Many motorists miss their MOT renewal date, leading to a bill for the UK repair industry totalling £21 million, new figures show.

Research by uSwitch.com shows that 65% of drivers illegally use their car after their certificate has expired, with a third taking up to a month to book their MOT after the deadline.

"Failure to remember your MOT renewal date is not only an offence, but the potential safety and financial consequences are a hefty price to pay for an innocent lapse of memory," says Mark Monteiro, Insurance Expert at uSwitch.com.

He says that the website offers a service to remind customers when their next MOT is due, which could prove a handy tool for those who are prone to forgetfulness.

Of those questioned by the website, 51% said they would like to receive such a reminder, especially with no official service already in place.

Earlier this week, uSwitch.com revealed that millions of motorists would be in support of the government's car scrappage scheme.
