Bank holiday drivers 'need to take breaks'

1 May 2009

Drivers heading away for the bank holiday weekend need to make sure they take plenty of breaks, the AA has warned.

It estimates that nearly a quarter of motorists only ever stop for a quick toilet break, while one in 20 never stop at all.

Andrew Howard, Head of Road Safety at the AA, suggests: "If you feel tired, stop, drink a strong coffee and have a 20-minute nap - simply stretching your legs and getting some fresh air isn't sufficient."

Failing to take breaks could lead to a motoring accident, which may increase car insurance premiums in the long-term.

Further statistics from the AA show that one in ten drivers admits to falling asleep at the wheel and 28% carry on when tired to reach their destination.

The AA recently revealed that car insurance premiums could rise by 11% during the remainder of 2009.
